Ice Safety on Prior Lake
Although the temperature has been fairly warm for the month of December, it is still important to be cautious of early ice on the lakes. As DNR conservation officer Lt. Adam Block said, “No fish is worth the risk of going through thin ice. At this point, it is going to take several consecutive days of below-freezing temperatures before enough solid ice has formed to support foot traffic, and even longer before snowmobilers should be on the ice.”
With unpredictable conditions, use extreme caution to avoid breaking through thin ice. Below is a picture with the recommended minimum ice thickness for new clear ice from the MN Department of Natural Resources.
