5 Color Combinations to Leave in 2024

When considering color combinations, there are several elements to keep in mind, such as undertones, color theory, and personal preference. But which colors should we move on from, and what should we replace them with? We’re here to share some answers.

Agreeable Gray Combinations

The color that shot forth with popularity in 2021, everyone was painting their home a shade of gray, most commonly, the agreeable gray. Overusing gray, especially when you pair walls or cabinets to match gray faux wood flooring, can appear monotonous and lack contrast and character. It also can make a room feel colder and bland. Instead of using these grays, opt for a brown hardwood. Starting with a neutral floor and working from there is always a great approach to interior design and allows for flexibility with more colors.

Purple & Gold

Vibrant tones can sometimes be overpowering, as seen with the combination of purple and gold. While this pairing can add flair to a space, it can easily become overwhelming, especially when used in artwork or bedding, where it may dominate the room. A more subtle alternative could be a soft lavender paired with cream or gold accents. This creates a smoother, more cohesive atmosphere, offering both comfort and a touch of elegance.

All White

We are leaving the all white color palette behind due to the same reason of the grays—it’s bland. If you want to stick to a similar approach but add some flair, consider the monochromatic approach. This approach involves using variations of a single color throughout a space. This technique relies on one dominant hue but incorporates different tones, shades, and tints of that color to create depth, contrast, and interest. Warm or off whites typically are a good palette for this. Another way to add flair is to add texture and accents to the room.

Red & Green

Red and green immediately evoke a Christmas vibe, which isn’t ideal for year-round use in interior design. While this combination has recently gained popularity as a vintage or personality-driven choice, it can be hard to pull off in a flattering way. If you want to bring red into your space, it works best as an accent color, especially when paired with soft creams or beiges. For green, opt for more earthy tones combined with deeper, moodier shades. This way, you can still infuse personality into the room without overwhelming it.

Black & Orange

Black and orange once emerged as a bold, striking combination, often associated with strong contrasts that bring energy, excitement, and a touch of drama. While it was popular in modern and contemporary designs, it’s now fading from favor. As interior design trends move toward warmer, more sophisticated aesthetics, bright orange has become less desirable. Instead, pairing black with deeper, earthy tones like burnt orange offers a cozier feel, while jewel tones add a bolder, more refined appeal.
