5 Popular Upgrades Designers Would Skip in Bathrooms
If you’re looking to upgrade or design a bathroom, you should be aware of some of the ‘luxury’ features that might not be worth your investment.
Heated Floors
Heated floors are always a standout feature in the bathroom, especially for those who live in Minnesota during the cold winter months. But in reality, many people simply forget to use their heated floors, or fail to consider the time it takes for them to heat up. To make the investment worth it, it is recommended to install an automation system to keep the heated floors on a timer to turn on each day when appropriate, otherwise, it may not be worth it.
TV Screens
There are certain people that don’t want to miss a second of the news, or simply enjoy having a TV on at all times while they are at home for entertainment, or just for background noise. However, installing a TV screen is not a recommended choice for a bathroom, especially in today’s high tech society. Instead, it is recommended that you invest in accessories that hold personal screens like your phone, laptop, or tablet. A TV can begin to look dated, and if it’s installed in the bath, it will be hard to replace.
Jetted Tub
The famous jetted tub, the popular choice to add a spa-like feature into one’s bath. But just like heated floors, they usually are not used as often as everyone thinks compared to the cost to install. Investing more money towards your shower for extra showerheads, or a steam feature, which can be used on a daily basis, is much more practical and better use of your money. A sleek soaking tub is also an option, and much easier to maintain.
Slabs Instead of Tile
This choice is where practicality and safety is chosen over the new modern look. Many designers suggest normal sized tiles over large slabs/tiles, especially on the flooring due to slip risk. Tiles and mosaics grout lines allow for friction, preventing falls, and the quality of these continue to improve in terms of maintenance.
Another option would be to consider porcelain tiles that mimic the look of stone, while keeping the safety feature still there. This is common also in poolside areas.
Mirrors with Integral Lighting
You will find the mirrors with the installed LED lighting around the edges oftentimes in luxury hotels, which easily has homeowners associate this feature with luxury. However, these lights are not easily replaced, and once they burn out, the whole piece is practically useless, which is not the most sustainable choice.
