Prior Lake Flood Prevention Mechanisms
In the summer of 2014 Prior Lake experienced a devastating flood that caused severe damage to several Prior Lake homes. It has been two years since the flood occurred and several committees have met to discuss the future of Prior Lake. The Prior Lake flood mitigation study was recently completed the Prior Lake-Spring Lake Watershed District and the city of Prior Lake. This study examined aspects of the flood and proposed preventive solutions for Prior Lake.
The strongest option that the study found that met a cost effective budget was a combination of 3 different solutions. The solutions are to actively manage the Prior Lake outlet low-flow gate, to increase the Prior Lake outlet capacity, and to increase the upper watershed storage. This combination will drop the 100-year flood level to within a half-foot of the ordinary high water level for Prior Lake. To see the effects of the flood of 2014, go to the url below!
