6 Cringey Decorating Mistakes

Have you ever thought about bringing a professional interior designer into your home? The thought can be exciting, but also be terrifying. Their keen eyes are able to catch the smallest of details, and they likely will find some of your decorating ideas to be quite, well, cringey. Below are six of the most common mistakes homeowners make with interior decorating that make professional designers cringe.

Matching Furniture with Accessories

When everything is too matchy matchy, it’s simply too much. Not everything in a room needs to match perfectly. Find items that relate to each other, and with furniture, check out different collections and mix and match.

Clutter

The more the merrier is simply not the case, unless you’re trying to replicate grandma’s home and all her collections. Quality over quantity, pick out a few nice pieces for your room to spend your money on rather than a bunch of small things. Open shelving is an ever growing fad today, but it has to be styled strategically. Lastly, have a spot for your daily clutter or your misc. kitchen appliances so it is all tucked away, it doesn’t deserve to take away from the design you have created in your home.

Improper Scale

This is one the average eye struggles to see all the time. Having the right size of furniture and decor for a room can make a significant difference in how the room looks/feels, like side tables that are the right height, or artwork that fills the space appropriately.

Scale is crucial in design. A sofa that’s too large or too small for a room, artwork that doesn’t appropriately fill wall space, or a rug that’s the wrong size can all disrupt the balance and harmony of a space. Scale creates a visual hierarchy and impacts the overall composition and feel of a design, so it’s important to pay attention to it when putting a room together.” —Gaia Guidi Filippi of Gaia G Interiors in Dallas, Texas

Low Quality Drapes

Do not cheap out on your window treatments! Window treatments are a key element to every room, and having dainty little drapes that don’t cover the window or hang too short can be a real damper on the room overall. It is important to choose the correct type for the space, pay attention to the fabric, and hang them at the proper height.

Too Many Doors

If you have a small space where there are closet doors obstructing the entrance door, or simply too many doors taking up wall space, this is what we mean.

Solutions like pocket doors, pony walls, sliding or stationary shower glass, or concealed jig doors can help maximize space, improve functionality, and prevent doors from bumping into each other.” —Gaia Guidi Filippi of Gaia G Interiors in Dallas, Texas

Non-Personal Art

Art pieces should be significant in looks, but also their story. If you do not have a story or a personal connection to the art pieces you choose, it automatically lacks a connection to the space. Don’t rush art, fill your space wisely.
