10 Design Items You Don’t Need in Your Home

Many people when designing their home always think of more elements they can add, but fail to recognize what they can and should get rid of. Below are ten design elements that your home can do without, and some alternatives for those to keep in mind.

  1. Clutter

This might seem like a no-brainer when it comes to the word “clutter”, but many homeowners do not realize how much clutter they create with their design choices. Everything you have on display should be able to be packed away when necessary. To avoid clutter buildup, invest in storage and make tidying up part of your daily routine.

  1. Too Many Built-Ins

Built-in cabinetry can be a stunning addition to a home, and can lead to practicality in a space. However, if you overdue the built-ins, it can lead the home to feel small and crammed. Also, excessive built-ins allow for limited flexibility in design choices down the road when you’re ready to mix things up.

  1. A Navy Blue Kitchen

Kitchen seems to be the trickiest space to design, and the one that stands out the most to homeowners and their guests. Paint color can play a large role in the kitchen’s mood, and navy blue is a no-go according to designers today, seeing it replaced often with dark green.

  1. Trend-Centric Design

Don’t make all of your design choices based on what is trending on TikTok or Facebook for the time being. We are living in a society where it is easy to be influenced, however trend-centric designs tend to lose popularity fast, so we advise you to be thoughtful about your design choices, and don’t jump to any conclusions too fast.

  1. Bold Paint Finishes

Although bold paint finishes can make a statement in a space, being too bold can cause a space to feel overwhelmed, or go out of style quickly. Instead, use something more timid and textured, like plaster or limewash, to add a sense of uniqueness to your space.

  1. Alcoves

Alcoves, a recess in the wall of a room, can be a stunning architectural design that can enhance a room greatly if designed and accented perfectly. However, for many, that is not the case. Be cautious with the choice of adding an alcove, because they often can become the messiest part of a space, collecting dust and clutter, leading to a chaotic design.

  1. Formal Living Rooms

Once upon a time, and not that long ago, living rooms were another staple part of the home, much like the kitchen. A separate and formally designed living room was in, and is now so far out. With the open floor plan coming into play, many homeowners enjoy a more practical space that is used daily and casually, often sharing an open space with the kitchen. Formal dining rooms are now hardly used and rather collect dust.

  1. Double Kitchen Islands

Having two islands sounds like a luxury addition for a kitchen, but really two can be impractical and cause your kitchen to feel like a maze. If you’re looking for more space to prep, we recommend expanding your current island.

  1. Overhead Lighting

It is becoming increasingly popular to dislike a room with overhead lighting, and although it is needed in most spaces, when it comes to design choices, the floor and table lamps, chandeliers, under cabinet lighting, dimmable light features, etc. are the best option.

  1. Budget Drapery

There are certain design pieces that you can get away with going the cheaper route, however, drapes aren’t one of them. Splurge on your curtains, because you likely will not be replacing them in the next few years anyhow.
